M.T. Vasudevan Nair one of India’s greatest writers of all time, died in Kozhikode at a private hospital on Wednesday (December 25, 2024). He was 91.

He was also an exceptional scriptwriter who revolutionised the art of screenplay writing in Malayalam cinema and authored several landmark films. Some of those films were directed by M.T. himself. His debut film as a director, Nirmalyam, in fact, won the National Award for the best film in 1974. He wasn’t too keen on directing films, and was happier writing fiction.

When it comes to fiction, it is difficult to imagine a writer who was loved more by the Malayali reader. His novels like RandamoozhamAsuravithu, ManjuKaalam and Nalukettu, continue to be printed, decades after they were first published. He also wrote several unforgettable short stories. The plots of those novels and short stories and the characters in them have become part of the Malayali’s cultural life.

India’s former prime minister Manmohan Singh, who steered the country through sweeping reforms and paved the way for its emergence as a global economic powerhouse, has died. He was 92.

Singh was taken to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi for emergency treatment on Thursday after “sudden loss of consciousness at home,” the hospital said in a statement, adding that he had been undergoing care for age-related medical conditions.

Despite emergency efforts, he was declared dead on Thursday night, the hospital said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said India was mourning Singh’s passing, calling him one of the country’s “most distinguished leaders.”

“As our Prime Minister, he made extensive efforts to improve people’s lives,” Modi wrote on X on Thursday.

Known for wearing his trademark blue turban, Singh was India’s first prime minister from the Sikh minority. He led the country from 2004 to 2014, completing a rare two full terms in the world’s largest – and often tumultuous – democracy.

An Oxford-trained economist, he was widely credited as the architect of far-reaching reforms that opened up India’s economy, propelling years of unprecedented growth and lifting tens of millions of people out of poverty.

For the second year in a row, Kerala has secured the top spot in the 2024 State Food Safety Index (SFSI). This achievement reinforces Kerala’s commitment to maintaining high standards in food safety across India. The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) released the rankings during the Global Food Regulators Summit 2024.

Following Kerala, Tamil Nadu ranked second, and Jammu and Kashmir ranked third. Gujarat, which had held the top position in 2021, slipped to fourth place this year. These changes show that food safety performance in India varies yearly as states work to improve their systems.

The SFSI was launched in 2019 to evaluate how well states and union territories are doing in food safety.

Kerala’s Chief Minister, Pinarayi Vijayan, recently inaugurated India’s first supercapacitor manufacturing facility at Keltron Component Complex Limited (KCCL) in Kallyassery, Kannur. This marks an important milestone for both Keltron and India’s electronics industry.

Keltron, founded in 1974, is known as one of the first government-owned companies in the electronics and IT sectors in India. It set a high standard for other government-run companies in the country. With this new supercapacitor facility, Keltron continues to show leadership in the industry.

The new supercapacitor plant was developed with help from the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). It cost ₹42 crore to build and is expected to strengthen Kerala’s status as a major hub for electronics. The plant will also benefit industries like defence and electric vehicles, which rely on advanced technology.

The Kerala government has plans to invest ₹1,000 crore more to boost the electronics sector. This includes upgrading current factories and building new infrastructure, like an IT corridor and an electronics manufacturing park in Amballur. These steps aim to make Kerala a leader in electronics manufacturing.
Supercapacitors are special devices that can store and release energy very quickly. This makes them very useful for electric vehicles and space missions. They are also important for the defence, automotive, and aerospace industries, which need reliable and fast energy solutions.

Kerala has earned the top spot in the Urban Governance Index (UGI) by the Praja Foundation, because of its strengths in managing finances and planning at the local level. However, the study also points out areas where Kerala can improve, especially in city administration.

What is the Urban Governance Index (UGI)?
The UGI is a study that looks at how well cities are governed in India. It took two years to complete and checked various aspects of governance. Kerala scored 59.31 out of 100, beating Odisha, which scored 55.10. This index can attract investments and improve the sustainability of cities by keeping governance efficient and up-to-date.

October 2, 2024, an annular solar eclipse will take place. This means that people in certain parts of South America will be able to see the Moon cover the center of the Sun, leaving a bright ring around the edges—like a “ring of fire.” In other parts of the world, like North America and areas around the Pacific Ocean, people will witness a partial solar eclipse, where only part of the Sun will be covered by the Moon. Unfortunately, this eclipse will not be visible in India.

What is a Solar Eclipse?
A solar eclipse happens when the Moon moves directly between the Earth and the Sun, blocking some or all of the Sun’s light. This causes a shadow to fall on certain parts of the Earth. Depending on how the Moon and the Sun align, different types of solar eclipses can occur.
