Kerala’s Chief Minister, Pinarayi Vijayan, recently inaugurated India’s first supercapacitor manufacturing facility at Keltron Component Complex Limited (KCCL) in Kallyassery, Kannur. This marks an important milestone for both Keltron and India’s electronics industry.

Keltron, founded in 1974, is known as one of the first government-owned companies in the electronics and IT sectors in India. It set a high standard for other government-run companies in the country. With this new supercapacitor facility, Keltron continues to show leadership in the industry.

The new supercapacitor plant was developed with help from the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). It cost ₹42 crore to build and is expected to strengthen Kerala’s status as a major hub for electronics. The plant will also benefit industries like defence and electric vehicles, which rely on advanced technology.

The Kerala government has plans to invest ₹1,000 crore more to boost the electronics sector. This includes upgrading current factories and building new infrastructure, like an IT corridor and an electronics manufacturing park in Amballur. These steps aim to make Kerala a leader in electronics manufacturing.
Supercapacitors are special devices that can store and release energy very quickly. This makes them very useful for electric vehicles and space missions. They are also important for the defence, automotive, and aerospace industries, which need reliable and fast energy solutions.
